Hand-writing fonts
For this site I’m mostly using SIL’s Gentium Plus font, which has excellent Unicode support for Latin and Cyrillic script.
- Norwegian: Ææ Øø Åå
- Slovene and B/C/M/S with Latin script: Čč Ćć Đđ Šš Žž
- Diacritics for Arabic transliteration: Āā Īī Ūū Ḍḍ Ḥḥ Ḳḳ Ṣṣ Ṭṭ Ẓẓ
- Esperanto: Ĉĉ Ĝĝ Ĥĥ Ĵĵ Ŝŝ Ŭŭ
- Greek: Αα Ββ Γγ Δδ Εε Ζζ Ηη Θθ Ιι Κκ Λλ Μμ Νν Ξξ Οο Ππ Ρρ Σσς Ττ Υυ Φφ Χχ Ψψ Ωω
Gentium also looks nice without adjustments to the line height, which is a plus for inline math with MathJax.
I’d like to vary this a bit with a friendly hand-writing font. I love Kimberly Geschwein’s very readable Architects Daughter, but it’s missing a few key bits that I will want to have, like letters with dots below for Arabic transliteration, and it has no Cyrillic support at all.
- Norwegian: Ææ Øø Åå - the å is a bit hard to read.
- Slovene and B/C/M/S: Čč Ćć Đđ Šš Žž – it’s missing đ, but it can be written dj, so it’s not a huge issue, and not an issue for Slovene at all
- Diacritics for Arabic transliteration: only long vowels with macrons above, Āā Īī Ūū, and even so it’s missing missing the capital Ī; no dots below
- Esperanto: Ĉĉ Ĝĝ Ĥĥ Ĵĵ Ŝŝ Ŭŭ – very nice
- No Cyrillic or Greek
In fact, I’ve only found two fonts that do cover the character range I’m interested in, minus Greek. Kevin Burke’s Pangolin is also very readable, but it’s a bit rough and heavy:
- Norwegian: Ææ Øø Åå
- Slovene and B/C/M/S: Čč Ćć Đđ Šš Žž;
- Diacritics for Arabic transliteration: Āā Īī Ūū Ḍḍ Ḥḥ Ḳḳ Ṣṣ Ṭṭ Ẓẓ – the only one missing is Ḳḳ, and I use Qq for qāf anyway.
- Esperanto: Ĉĉ Ĝĝ Ĥĥ Ĵĵ Ŝŝ Ŭŭ
Impallari Type’s Caveat has similarly good coverage and the lighter touch I’d like, but I’m not sure it’s readable enough:
- Norwegian: Ææ Øø Åå
- Slovene and B/C/M/S: Čč Ćć Đđ Šš Žž; Cyrillic
- Diacritics for Arabic transliteration: Āā Īī Ūū Ḍḍ Ḥḥ Ḳḳ Ṣṣ Ṭṭ Ẓẓ
- Esperanto: Ĉĉ Ĝĝ Ĥĥ Ĵĵ Ŝŝ Ŭŭ
And then there’s the missing Greek, which I’m sure I’ll want sooner or later.
